Sure to keep dentists around the world happy, Ferrari has just announced a new poseurs car. No, the target market isn’t dentists (exclusively) but they stand to benefit the most from all the fillings poseurs are bound to lose as they use this track day special as a boulevard cruiser. So what exactly is this car?

It’s Ferrari’s hardcore 430 Scuderia Spider 16M based on the regular 430 Scuderia coupe (also known as the Scud missile). The recipe for the Spider 16M is simple: take one sublime Ferrari Scuderia, add no power but a significant amount of weight, then chop the roof off to mangle the excellent structural rigidity and show the world that you’re a knobber. To top it all off and to ensure that such a bipolar mess of a car is successful, make it only slightly less exclusive than the Ferrari Enzo (three hundred and ninety nine Enzos were produced vs 499 Scud Spiders) and use it to commemorate Ferrari’s 16th Constructor’s Championship in Formula 1. 

For the hefty price of admission, one receives a 4.3L V8 with 510hp, 8500rpm redline, 0-100kph in only 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 315kph. This is only 5% slower than the Scuderia coupe but expect the Spider to be at least 5% more expensive. Funny how that works. The Scud Spider weighs about 200 lbs more than the svelte 2756 lbs of the coupe, but that still makes it lighter than the standard F430 and you already know the Scud is more powerful. The 16M utilizes the brilliantly fast Superfast2 semi-auto transmission that rips off shifts in 60 ms. The only other thing I can think of that takes 60 ms will happen in my pants when I get to drive this beast.

Come to think of it, it doesn’t really matter that the Scuderia Spider is slower around the track or in a straight line than the “standard” Scud because you’ll be enjoying yourself 10 times more when you hear the glorious Italian soundtrack sing at over 8g in all its glory. So maybe Ferrari is looking for 499 audiophiles for owners. This hypothesis is further supported by the fact that this car comes with a special-edition 16GB iPod Touch. Next thing you know Ferrari will have a line of speakers with Bang & Olufsen. 

So is this car a track car? Is it a status symbol? Is it a boulevard cruiser? Is it a symphony on four wheels? Is it all of these? We don’t know yet, but for you dear Reader, we intend to find out.
