Axis Tuesday: Dreaming of a Porsche Hatchback

I love hatches, it’s as simple as that. It’s probably something about the combination of utility and improved aesthetics. Probably. Or maybe it’s genetic and I have no say in the matter. So I obviously stopped breathing when I saw this picture.

The rumourmill is currently spinning with word that Stuttgart is considering a two-door hatchback much like the one you see here. Think of it as a German CRX. Blasphemy you say? Get off your nostalgic ass-engined Nazi sled horse. Have you seen the Cayenne? With increasingly stringent emissions standards on both sides of the pond, as well as a consumer shift to smaller and less expensive cars, the timing for such a Porsche couldn’t be better.

The vehicle, if it sees the light of day, will likely be based on a Volkswagen platform to lessen the costs of development. I think that the new Scirocco is a likely candidate for donor car because Porsche would just have to flip it to RWD. Easy as torte

I’m not as fond of this front 3/4 angle as I am of the rear 3/4, but this is just a rendering. And even if this were the production model, it would be a damn sight better looking than Porsche’s current hatchback in the range, the Panamera.

I, for one, would applaud Porsche if they were to green-light this project. It is much less of a departure for the company than the Cayenne or the Panamera and it would give the sports car manufacturer a competitor to the 135i, S3, and MiTo GTA.
