Fiat is currently involved in a toe-to-toe business battle with Canadian-Austrian parts-maker Magna to gain control of Opel. If Fiat were to gain control, it would be able to do so wholly on its own. Magna, on the other hand, is seeking the backing of Russian automaker GAZ. Also on the table is the possibility of the German government investing directly in keeping Opel afloat without the aid of outside entities. What the German government decides will determine whether or not Fiat or Magna is even necessary in this equation.

A decision from the German government is expected later this month.
